A rocker panel, also known as a sill panel, is an essential structural component located on the lower portion of a vehicle's body, typically between the front and rear wheel wells, but there are cargo door rocker panels as well. This horizontal panel runs along the bottom edge of the vehicle's doors, connecting the A-pillar (the vertical support between the windshield and front door) to the B-pillar (the vertical support between the front and rear doors) or the B-pillar to the C-pillar (the vertical support between the rear door and rear window), or the pillars on either side of a cargo door.
The rocker panel serves multiple purposes:
1. Structural Support: The rocker panel adds strength and rigidity to the vehicle's body structure, providing stability and helping to distribute the weight evenly.
2. Protection: One of the primary functions of the rocker panel is to protect the lower body of the vehicle from damage caused by road debris, rocks, and other hazards. It acts as a barrier, shielding the vehicle's undercarriage and interior from potential impact.
3. Visual Appeal: In addition to its functional role, the rocker panel contributes to the overall aesthetics of the vehicle. It can be styled to match the design and contours of the vehicle, adding a visually appealing element to the lower side area.
Due to their position and proximity to the ground, rocker panels are prone to damage from road debris, corrosion caused by exposure to moisture and salt, and wear and tear over time. In cases where the rocker panels become rusted, dented, or damaged, they may need to be repaired or replaced to maintain the vehicle's integrity and appearance.
